::: hark, the hearld angels sing!! :::
the ox has a brother that is traveling in asia . . . here is his blog of interesting tales . . . warning: viewer ratings may change depending on the geographic necessities and the culture encountered . . . (that's probably the most post-protesant thought i've had in a while!) . . . :)
my family’s worship experience this weekend was incredible . . . we have been frequenting a group of people that gather in a neighboring village . . . the sign on the front of the building where we met reads trinity episcopal church it is in beaver pa . . . theologically it seems most of the folks I listened to who were speaking were conservatives . . . tending towards something of an academic nature . . . but much more important they were REAL . . . individuals that had gathered as a small tribe who were struggling to reflect on the meaning of advent . . . in my mind this little group of people and the liturgy that we participated in help me specifically and my little family to ‘re-calibrate’ what the meaning of this season was originally . . . and fortunately for us the church operated just as it was intented to . . . providing us with some directional correction!!!
I awoke early again this morning and read some more of mclaren’s thoughts . . . EXCELLENT stuff . . . I have really enjoyed reading him . . . oddly enough at the ‘lighting of the candle’ this morning’s advent reading that linda, jonathan and I are reading it matched mclaren’s focus on genesis chp 12 . . . when that sort of thing occurs I sort of sit up and take notice for fear that God is attempting to speak to my dullness in hearing . . . in essence what I heard was that God had created us to bless us NOT so that we could simply contain the blessing and be an image to be modeled within our communities . . . the scriptural justification attempted with this approach is saint paul’s words . . . follow me as I follow Christ . . . rather what i am learning from this mornings events is that God blessed . . . adam & eve . . . noah and his family . . . abram and his descendants . . . us . . . TO BE INSTRUMENTS OF BLESSINGS TO THE OTHERS AROUND US NOT CONTAINERS OF BLESSINGS TO BE SIMPLY MODELED OR OBSERVED FROM A DISTANCE . . . i’m sure that sounds like an old message repackaged to many who may hear it but for me it was (again) a helpful correction and ‘re-calibration’ of our family’s spiritually trajectory . . . and much needed . . .
during reflection this morning and after reading and discussing the passage above i asked linda and jonathan to put down on a piece of paper (sometime soon) and to ask the store employees to put down on a piece of paper an idea of how we can fulfill this concept of being a blessing to others rather than being ‘containers’ of these blessings . . . stay tuned!! like the advent candle this morning represented our anticipation . . . i feel sort of like I have the full blown disease of anticipation . . . and that’s a great thing!!!The Call of Abram
The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you. "I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you." So Abram left, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Haran. He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there. Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. The LORD appeared to Abram and said, "To your offspring I will give this land." So he built an altar there to the LORD , who had appeared to him. From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD . Then Abram set out and continued toward the Negev.
any ideas from the larger community, how are you going to express the blessing that God has made you during this season of emphasis???
peacefully loving the mystery :::
